Arylcyclohexylamines are thought to exert their effects mainly through the antagonism of NMDA receptors. This interaction leads to a range of outcomes, including anesthetic, anticonvulsant (seizure-preventing), and dissociative properties. Interestingly, contrary to common assumptions, the majority of arylcyclohexylamines do not notably inhibit the reuptake of dopamine or activate μ-opioid receptors.
