Click to open PDFIt is crucial to understand that while 5-MeO-DMT and DMT share chemical similarities, they possess distinct effects and safety profiles. Therefore, 5-MeO-DMT should not be substituted for DMT; they must be regarded as entirely different substances and treated accordingly.
5-MeO-DMT, often referred to as “The God Molecule,” is a psychedelic compound within the tryptamine class. It occurs naturally in a variety of plant species and in at least one toad species, the Sonoran Desert toad. For more information, we recommend Hamilton Morris’s pamphlet “Bufo Alvarius: The Psychedelic Toad of the Sonoran Desert.”
This compound is closely related to DMT and 5-HO-DMT and has been traditionally utilized as an entheogen in South American tribal ceremonies.
In recent years, 5-MeO-DMT has gained significant popularity, with many anecdotal reports highlighting its potential as a healing agent. Mainstream media outlets, including Forbes, have also explored the healing possibilities of this substance.
Although research on 5-MeO-DMT is still limited, some studies have corroborated these anecdotal claims. In a recent preliminary study, 42 participants who consumed 5-MeO-DMT reported reductions in depression and anxiety, along with increased life satisfaction and mindfulness. These effects were observed to persist for at least four weeks following the initial assessment.
Another study involving 362 individuals who had used 5-MeO-DMT found that 80% of respondents reported improvements in anxiety and depression.
The psychedelic effects of 5-MeO-DMT are believed to primarily arise from its role as a partial agonist at the 5-HT2A receptor, exhibiting a high binding affinity for both the 5-HT2A and 5-HT1A subtypes. However, our understanding of these interactions and their contribution to the psychedelic experience remains limited.
Additionally, 5-MeO-DMT is thought to inhibit the reuptake of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, noradrenaline, and dopamine, although the significance of these mechanisms is not well understood. Therefore, it is strongly advised to avoid combining 5-MeO-DMT with SSRIs, SRIs, MAOIs, RIMAs, or any other substances that act as releasing agents or reuptake inhibitors of monoamine neurotransmitters (such as serotonin and dopamine).
