It is structurally related to a variety of designer fluorinated substituted amphetamines, including compounds like 2-FA, 2-FMA, 3-FA, 4-FMA, and 4-FA.
Similar to its parent compound 3-FA, the pharmacological, toxicological, and subjective effects of 3-FEA in humans remain largely unexplored. Anecdotal evidence suggests that 3-FEA functions as a moderately potent serotonin-dominant triple monoamine releaser, resulting in a combination of entactogenic and mild stimulating effects.
With a very brief history of human recreational use, 3-FEA's potent psychostimulant effects, potential for habit formation, and unknown toxicity profile warrant strong recommendations for employing proper harm reduction practices when using this substance.
3-FEA, or 3-fluoroethamphetamine, is a synthetic compound belonging to the amphetamine chemical class. Amphetamines are characterized by a phenethylamine core, which consists of a phenyl ring connected to an amino (NH2) group via an ethyl chain that is substituted with a methyl group at Rα (making them alpha-methylated phenethylamines).
3-FEA is the 3-position fluorinated analog of ethylamphetamine (also known as ethamphetamine) and is also an analog of fenfluramine, where the 3-trifluoromethyl group is replaced by a 3-fluoro substituent.
While 3-FEA has not been studied as extensively as traditional amphetamines, it is believed to primarily act as a triple reuptake inhibitor and/or releaser of the monoamine neurotransmitters serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine, similar to other substituted amphetamines with analogous substitutions.
Research indicates that, in comparison to unsubstituted ethylamphetamine, 3-fluoroethamphetamine is a less effective dopamine releaser but a more potent releaser of both serotonin and norepinephrine. This results in stronger reinforcing effects in animal studies among a range of 3-substituted amphetamine derivatives tested, even though it is not the most powerful dopamine releaser.
This suggests that 3-FEA effectively elevates the levels of the three primary monoamine neurotransmitters—dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin—by acting as a releasing agent and/or by partially blocking the transporter proteins that typically clear these neurotransmitters from the synaptic cleft after they have completed their role in neural transmission. This blockade allows these neurotransmitters to accumulate in core synaptic regions, leading to a combination of relaxing, stimulating, disinhibiting, and euphoric effects associated with entactogenic substituted amphetamines like MDMA or 4-FA.
